South Benfleet grew after its station opened in 1855 and spread rapidly after the Second World War, merging with Thundersley to the north. Housing across both is a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, chalets and bungalows, with some low-rise flats. The old centre around the High Street and St Mary's Church is a conservation area with an Article 4 direction. Some roads are unmade, including parts of The Chase in Thundersley and lanes between Felstead Road and Catherine Road, which matters when a heavier vehicle is collecting bulky or garden waste.
Bungalows with wide drives are the easy case: the truck backs right up and loading is quick. Dismantling a sofa or bed that won't come out in one piece is £30 an item.
Twenty minutes down the A130. We know the awkward access on the older Benfleet streets and which estates need the smaller truck.
