Rules of thumb
- One cubic yard is about ten bin bags.
- Heavy waste (soil, rubble, concrete) goes in 8-yard or smaller.
- Level with the rim, never heaped. Overfilled skips can't be lifted.
- Need it on the road? 6-yard is the maximum in most of Essex. Ask about a road permit.
- When in doubt, go one size up. The next size is usually only £40 more, and a second skip is a lot more.
Questions people ask
How many bin bags in a 6-yard skip?
About 60 standard black bags, or roughly 50 to 60 bulk bags' worth of loose waste. It's the most popular size for a reason.
What's the biggest skip that takes soil and rubble?
8-yard. Above that the lorry can't legally lift the weight, so 10 to 16-yard skips are for light bulky waste only.
Skip or collection?
If the waste is ready now, and you have help to load it, wait and load is usually quicker: a full truck is £540, our driver helps, and nothing sits on the road. If it builds up over days, a skip. Read our comparison.
