Barking and Dagenham Council issues skip permits in Barking, and only to skip contractors registered with it. A skip on your drive needs nothing; on the road it needs a licence, and we apply for you. Allow at least a week. Size limit on the road: skip must not exceed 5 metres long by 2 metres wide unless specifically authorised; anything bigger needs a driveway or private land. Barking at a glance

Homes

Victorian Barking was built as continuous terraces of two-storey houses with bay windows, small front enclosures and back yards, a pattern still found near the town centre. The Becontree Estate extends into the east of the town. Thames View, built in 1954-60 south of the A13, has about 2,000 homes in terraces, flats and maisonettes around Bastable Avenue. Barking Riverside, on former power station land, has permission for 10,800 homes. Terraces without side access, and flats reached by stairs or lifts, make carrying distance and parking the main practical points when clearing a home.

Building work

Regeneration is spread across the town centre, Roding Riverside along Abbey Road, and Barking Riverside beside the Thames. Thames Road is designated a transformation area for about 3,500 homes with modern industrial space. Two conservation areas apply in the centre: Abbey and Barking Town Centre, and Abbey Road Riverside. Domestic work is mainly loft conversions and rear extensions on terraced houses, where a skip normally stands on the road under licence and any parking bay has to be suspended first. Both the A13 and the A406 North Circular are red routes.

Businesses

Barking Market trades on East Street on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, beside the town centre shops and Vicarage Field shopping centre on Ripple Road. Stalls occupy the street on trading days, so collections have to be timed around them; traders produce cardboard, crates, packaging and food waste. The industrial area around River Road and Thames Road at Creekmouth holds businesses ranging from small manufacturers to multinational firms. The Ice House Quarter on Abbey Road has studios and workspace in former industrial buildings. London Road multi-storey car park has a 2.05 metre height limit.
