How we price garden clearance →Garden waste collection in South Ockendon: what to know
South Ockendon sits just outside the M25 on the western edge of Thurrock and is dominated by large post-war estates, including the Flowers Estate built by the Greater London Council, with newer housing at Brandon Groves on the old hospital site and on the former Ford factory site off Arisdale Avenue.
South Ockendon grew from a village around The Green into a large post-war settlement. Prefabs of the late 1940s gave way to the Flowers Estate, built by the Greater London Council in the late 1960s as concrete-panel terraces in rows of eight. Brandon Groves followed after 1994 on the former hospital site, and newer homes occupy the old car-plant land off Arisdale Avenue. Mid-terrace houses have no side access, so garden waste and bulky items come through the house, and a weekday permit parking area covers closes such as Celandine Close and Tamarisk Road.
Terraced streets with resident parking are routine: the truck stops in the road for a few minutes while it's loaded. Rear gardens with no side access are normal for us; we barrow it through the house on sheets if we have to.
Linford Household Waste and Recycling Centre takes garden waste. No booking is needed, but the site is for Thurrock residents only and proof of address is required; trade waste is refused. Small vans and single-axle trailers under 1.8m need a council permit (6 visits a year, or 2 for a hired vehicle), trailers are only admitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and larger vehicles such as Ford Transits, Luton vans, tippers, flatbeds and minibuses are not allowed in. For anything bigger than a couple of bags, a collection from your South Ockendon garden is usually quicker.
