Tilbury grew up as a dock town beside the Port of Tilbury, and most of its housing is terraces and flats laid out between Calcutta Road, St Chad's Road and the railway. The port and the warehousing off the A1089 make it one of the main freight and logistics areas in Thurrock.
Tilbury grew with its docks from the late nineteenth century, and much of its housing is council-built: the urban district council formed in 1912 began a programme that ran through the 1920s, and the Broadway Estate followed in the 1960s. Residential streets including Adelaide Road, Toronto Road, Malta Road and Dock Road lie within controlled parking zones T1 to T4, which operate Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Before bulky furniture or garden waste is cleared, it helps to check whether a collection vehicle can stop outside during those hours.
Terraced streets with resident parking are routine: the truck stops in the road for a few minutes while it's loaded. Dismantling a sofa or bed that won't come out in one piece is £30 an item.

- No booking is needed, but the site is for Thurrock residents only and proof of address is required; trade waste is refused. Small vans and single-axle trailers under 1.8m need a council permit (6 visits a year, or 2 for a hired vehicle), trailers are only admitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and larger vehicles such as Ford Transits, Luton vans, tippers, flatbeds and minibuses are not allowed in. Alternative: Linford is the only household waste site in Thurrock. Essex County Council centres such as Pitsea are restricted to residents of the Essex County Council area, so Thurrock households cannot use them.
