Tilbury grew up as a dock town beside the Port of Tilbury, and most of its housing is terraces and flats laid out between Calcutta Road, St Chad's Road and the railway. The port and the warehousing off the A1089 make it one of the main freight and logistics areas in Thurrock.
The Tilbury Town Deal, awarded in July 2021, is funding public-realm improvements at Civic Square, a gateway scheme around Tilbury Town station and heritage links along Ferry Road towards the riverside and Tilbury Fort. The 1960s Broadway Estate has been through a regeneration programme that included self-build homes, and the inter-war council houses are the kind of stock that attracts refurbishment, rear extensions and loft work. Dock Road is a busy through-road and the neighbouring streets are in controlled parking zones, so skip positions and lorry stops are worth agreeing before work starts.
RoRo containers need hard standing and about 40 feet of straight access for the hook-loader. Around Tilbury that usually means a yard, a compound or a car park: Port of Tilbury, Calcutta Road and Dock Road are the kind of sites they suit. On the industrial estates we can get the larger vehicles in, which keeps the price per tonne down for heavy or bulky loads.
They can't go on the public road: licences from Thurrock Council cover builders' skips only. A RoRo always sits on private land.

Alternative: Linford is the only household waste site in Thurrock. Essex County Council centres such as Pitsea are restricted to residents of the Essex County Council area, so Thurrock households cannot use them.
