Hornchurch is a largely inter-war suburb in Havering, mixing semis and bungalows around Elm Park and Hacton with large detached houses on the Emerson Park estate. Most homes have a driveway, so a skip can often be kept off the road and no Havering licence is needed.
Hornchurch was built up mainly between the wars. Estates such as Haynes Park and Grey Towers, and the Elm Park estate opened in 1935, were laid out at a higher density than earlier development. Emerson Park is different: an estate begun in 1895 with large detached houses on plots of about an acre, where covenants limited density. St George's Park occupies the former hospital on Suttons Lane, and Park Rise, beside Harrow Lodge Park, provides 175 homes for over-55s. Plot size and floor level largely decide how furniture and garden waste can be brought out.
Gerpins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre accepts electricals. Free for residents of Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Newham and Redbridge who show a current council tax bill or driving licence. Cars with ordinary household waste need no booking, but vans under 3,500kg, trailers and any DIY or renovation waste must be booked in advance, and Luton vans, tippers, flatbeds and tail-lift vans are refused. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
In Hornchurch we plan the stop before we arrive: controlled parking and red routes mean the truck can load but not wait, which is all a collection needs.
