There is no recycling centre in the town; the nearest is Brentwood's at Coxtie Green Road, about 6 miles away.
Chipping Ongar's High Street is a conservation area with around 70 listed buildings, and at its narrowest the houses and shops stand very close to the carriageway. North of the centre, towards Shelley, a post-war council estate planned for about 450 houses was laid out between the Moreton and Epping roads, mostly two-storey homes with modest gardens. Marden Ash to the south and Greensted to the south-west are smaller settlements within the parish. High Street properties rarely have vehicle access at the front, whereas the estate houses are usually reached directly from the road.
Villages and farm tracks around Chipping Ongar can be narrow, so we check the access on a map before we set off and bring the right size of vehicle. Rear gardens with no side access are normal for us; we barrow it through the house on sheets if we have to.
Brentwood Recycling Centre takes garden waste. Every visit must be booked in advance (Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists are exempt). Vans, pick-ups and large trailers are accepted with a separate van booking, and limited amounts of DIY waste from your own home are accepted.
