How to get rid of an old sofa in Essex

Getting rid of a sofa used to mean the tip or a skip. Since the rules on chemicals called POPs, sofas and other padded seating have to be handled separately from everything else. Here's what that means for you, and every way to get rid of one.

By LM Waste Management Ltd · Updated October 2026

What are POPs, and why do they matter for my sofa?

POPs are persistent organic pollutants. Some flame-retardant chemicals once used in sofa foam and fabric are POPs: they don't break down, and they build up in the environment. You can't tell by looking whether your sofa has them, so the rules treat all old upholstered seating the same way.

In England, the Environment Agency's guidance says waste upholstered seating must not go to landfill and must not be mixed with other waste. It has to be destroyed, normally by incineration. The rules cover:

  • sofas, sofa beds and corner sofas
  • armchairs and recliners
  • padded dining and kitchen chairs, and stools
  • futons, bean bags and sofa or floor cushions

They don't cover mattresses, beds, curtains, or wooden chairs with no padding. For mattresses, see our mattress disposal guide.

Please don't cut the sofa up yourself to make it smaller. Breaking open the foam and fabric is exactly what the rules are trying to avoid, and councils ask people not to.

Can I put a sofa in a skip?

Many skip firms now refuse sofas or charge extra, because a sofa in a mixed skip has to be pulled out and handled on its own. In our skips a sofa or armchair is £60 each on top of the skip: add it when you book the skip. See what can go in a skip.

Option 1: is it still good? Pass it on

If it's clean and in good shape, look for the fire safety label, usually sewn under the seat cushions or along the bottom edge.

  • With the label: furniture charities and reuse shops may take it, and some collect.
  • Without the label: charity shops can't sell it on, by law. You can still give it away privately to someone who wants it.

Option 2: buying a new one? Ask the shop

Some furniture shops will take your old sofa away when they deliver the new one, usually for a fee. Ask when you order. Unlike electricals, shops don't have to offer take-back.

Option 3: your council's bulky waste collection

Most councils collect sofas, but several now book upholstered items separately because of the POPs rules.

CouncilPrice, and what's worth knowing
Southend-on-Sea1 individual bulky item £15; up to 3 bulky items £40; up to 5 bulky items £60; combined items (3 piece suite/corner sofa, or dining table and 6 chairs) £35. Each household can also book one free collection per service year (up to 5 individual items or 1 combination item), subject to availability.
Castle PointMinimum charge of £49.18 for up to 3 items; additional items £7.60 each; maximum of 10 items. Upholstered items need a separate booking at the same rates.
Brentwood£25 for the first item, additional items are £15 (the same rates apply to upholstered POPs items, which are booked separately)
Rochford£23.22 for the first item, additional items are charged £11.09 eachSofas and armchairs are collected separately.
Basildon£30 for 1 to 5 items (the council's page still gives this as its April 2025 to March 2026 charge)
Chelmsford£31 for the first item, £13.60 for each additional item (a corner sofa counts as two items); prices valid until 31 December 2026
Harlow1 to 5 items £35.50; 6 to 8 items £53.50; 9 to 12 items £77.50; 13 to 16 items £101.50. Upholstered furniture carries an additional fee per item (£3 to £30 depending on size). No collection fee for small electrical items and textiles.Put sofas out separately from other items.
Thurrock£44.00 for either 1 item, 2 items or 3 items; a further £12.00 for each item in addition to the first 3; up to 8 items per booking
HaveringFor 1 to 3 items the cost is £71.50; for every additional item the cost is £18.50
RedbridgeOne free collection every 12 months (rolling) of up to three items; extra items cost £15.20 each, paid in advanceA sofa counts as one item.

From each council's website, checked October 2026. Prices change, usually every April, so check the council's own page before you book.

The sofa has to be outside by early morning on the day (usually by 7am) and the crew won't come in. Our council bulky waste guide covers every council we work in.

Option 4: take it to the tip yourself

Every Essex County Council recycling centre takes sofas and chairs. They go in a separate container, so ask the staff where to put yours. You need to book a slot for every visit, cars included, and a van or large trailer needs a van slot at one of the van-friendly sites. Most sofas won't fit in a car, which is where most people get stuck.

Option 5: book a collection with us

We collect sofas and armchairs across Essex and East London at fixed prices you see before you pay. They go to a licensed facility under the Environment Agency's rules for POPs, so they aren't recycled.

So a 3-seater sofa and an armchair together come to £140, not £180.

How it works

  • Leave it at the front of the house, on the drive, in a side passage or in a garage. That's what the prices cover, and you don't need to be in.
  • Inside the house or flat? Say so when you book and we carry it out: £72 an hour (at least one hour), plus £18 a floor above the first floor if there's no lift. An adult needs to be there for inside collections.
  • Choose from the available collection days when you book. Book by 4pm the working day before your collection day.
  • Pay by card online, and your confirmation comes by email with a waste transfer note to follow.

Leaving it outside? Cover it if rain is forecast. It's not needed for disposal, but it's easier for everyone.

Questions people ask

Can I put a sofa in a skip?

In ours, yes, for £60 each on top of the skip: add it when you book. Padded seating has to be kept apart from the rest of the skip and sent for incineration, which is what the charge covers. If the sofa is the only big thing going, a collection may work out cheaper.

Why does sofa disposal cost more than it used to?

Upholstered seating now has to be kept apart from other waste and sent for destruction, not landfill. Separate handling and incineration cost more, for councils and private firms alike.

Can the council take my sofa and my other bulky items together?

It depends on the council. Castle Point, Brentwood and Rochford collect upholstered items separately from other bulky items. With us, a sofa, a fridge and some bags can all go in one booking with one base fee.

Do I need to be in?

Not if the sofa is outside, in a side passage or in a garage. If we're carrying it out of the house or flat, an adult needs to be there.

Is a leather sofa any different?

No. Leather, fake leather and fabric sofas are all covered by the same rules.

“I had a great experience with LM Waste Management. The price was very competitive and clear from the start. On the day of collection, he arrived on time, worked efficiently, and even swept the driveway after finishing. Levi was polite, kind, and very courteous throughout the process. It’s rare to get such professional service combined with such a friendly attitude. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend LM Waste Management to anyone — excellent service from start to finish!”

“Very good service. We had a big pile of timber panels from old sheds. They picked them all up and left the place tidy.”
