Basildon was designated a new town in 1949, and its first tenants moved into Redgrave Road, Vange, in 1951. Vange and Fryerns were followed by neighbourhoods including Barstable, Kingswood, Ghyllgrove and Lee Chapel. The first estates had one garage for every six homes.
