Basildon's a busy patch for us: post-war estates, the industrial parks at Burnt Mills, and a steady flow of commercial clearances around the town centre.
Basildon was designated a new town in 1949, and its first tenants moved into Redgrave Road, Vange, in 1951. Vange and Fryerns were followed by neighbourhoods including Barstable, Kingswood, Ghyllgrove and Lee Chapel. The first estates had one garage for every six homes. From the late 1950s layouts switched to Radburn schemes: short terraces reached by footpaths, with cars kept in rear service areas and garage blocks. On those estates furniture, appliances and garden waste have to be carried along a path to a road or parking court before loading.
Pitsea Recycling Centre accepts electricals. Every visit has to be booked in advance, cars included. Vans, pick-ups and trailers are accepted there with a booking. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
Blocks and conversions mean stairs and shared bin stores; the crew brings it all down, so tell us the floor when you book.
Fifteen minutes from our Wickford depot. We know which Basildon streets a 7.5t tipper won't fit down, and which need the smaller van. No wasted trips.
