Saffron Walden is a medieval market town and the administrative centre of Uttlesford, with narrow streets and timber-framed buildings around the Market Square and newer estates along Radwinter Road, Thaxted Road and Ashdon Road. Shire Hill is the main industrial estate, and the town's recycling centre is on Thaxted Road.
Saffron Walden's medieval core, including Castle Street, Bridge Street and Gold Street, is closely built with early houses and falls within a conservation area of about 79 hectares with more than 300 listed buildings. Castle Street has a residents' parking permit scheme, and parking elsewhere in the old streets is on-street. The conservation area also takes in Mount Pleasant Road and West Road. Newer estates off Radwinter Road and Thaxted Road have driveways and garages. In the old streets, bulky items and garden waste generally have to be carried through the house to a vehicle waiting nearby.
Saffron Walden Recycling Centre accepts electricals. Every visit must be booked in advance (Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists are exempt). Vans, pick-ups and large trailers are accepted with a separate van booking, and limited amounts of DIY waste from your own home are accepted. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
