Stansted Mountfitchet is a large village in Uttlesford beside the M11 and Stansted Airport, with older terraces and cottages on the hills around Lower Street and Chapel Hill and newer estates such as Foresthall Park and Walpole Meadows. There is no Essex recycling centre in the village: the nearest are Saffron Walden (about 10 miles) and Harlow (about 13 miles).
Stansted Mountfitchet grew in clear stages. Medieval, Georgian and Victorian houses survive around Lower Street, Chapel Hill and Bentfield Green, and the parish has three conservation areas. The Mountfitchet Estate brought council housing in the 1950s, followed by the Hargrave Estate, Blythwood Gardens, Cannons Mead and Wetherfield in the 1960s and 1970s. Since 2000 the principal additions have been Foresthall Park with 715 homes, Walpole Meadows and Elms Farm. Older cottages tend to have no driveway and restricted rear access, while the post-war and recent estates generally allow loading from a drive or parking area.
Saffron Walden Recycling Centre accepts electricals. Every visit must be booked in advance (Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists are exempt). Vans, pick-ups and large trailers are accepted with a separate van booking, and limited amounts of DIY waste from your own home are accepted. A small fridge in the back of the car is possible; a fridge-freezer or American-style unit usually isn't.
Terraced streets with resident parking are routine: the truck stops in the road for a few minutes while it's loaded.
